School is almost finished!! In the meantime, however, little time to pick up a camera...but I have had time to dip into past photographs and play a little! This is a sculpture of a chalice in the the Ossuary in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic.
Yes, these are human bones! During the 14th century,victims of the Black Death were buried in the graveyard behind the church. The bones were later unearthed and piled to make room for the construction of a larger church, and also to accomodate the newly dead...during the late 10th century, a woodworker was employed to do SOMETHING with the piles of bones...and he did...He created sculptures, chandeliers, and all manner of decorations inside the church, all from the old bones! This is a marvelous place, but not for the squeamish! I'm not...and loved every minute of my day in Kutna Hora!
